FAQs: Public ShareFolder for Microsoft Outlook

Support / FAQ No. 09

You get the erroro message: „Can´t connect to server“: Error number: "800706ba (DCOM)"

Possible solution:

Description (Windows®): The RPC-Server ist not available..

This message can have different causes. check please at first all information in the FAQ: 04 and read thereafter the following further information.

If the IP-address is attainable, not however the computer name, the input of the IP address can be instead of the server name during the connecting mechanism in Outlook® a solution. Also it can be an advantage, if the server have a own (firm) IP-address

With firmly installed IP addresses without using a DNS server it is also possible to extended the host files of the Clients and the server. If you use an own DNS server, check please the entries of the DNS server for correctness.

A cause:
In the TCP IP settings of the network card is an external DNS server registered. On the register side "DNS configuration" is registered a DNS suffix and/or a domain.

Possible Solution:
This attitude is not correct in most cases. Delete the DNS suffix and/or the DNS server.

Another cause:
The DCOM-Interface is not correctly configured on the Client and/or the server.

Check the settings:

Open the DCOM-configuration with Start->Run->"dcomcnfg"

Only for Windows® XP and Windows® 2003:
- Open in the tree opinion:
- Component services->Computer->My computer
- right mouse-click on "My Computer" and select " Characteristics /Properties"

Change to registercard "Standard properties" and check the following options:

"DCOM (Distributed COM) activate on this computer" -> this must be activ.

"COM-Internet services activate on this computer" -> can be activ.

"Standard Authenticationlevel" -> "connect" (Standard) or "none"

" Standard identity changelevel" -> "Identify"

"Additional security for reference logging" -> can be activ.

Change to registercard "Standardprotocolls" and check the settings:

The entry "Connecting oriented TCP/IP" must stand in this place.

Windows® 98SE does not have a surface to configure the DCOM interface.
You can download this "DCOM98 for Windows® 98 configuration utility" as a separate download:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08b1ac1b-7a11-43e8-b59d-0867f9bdda66&displaylang=en.

Another cause:
The connection is running over NAT routing.

Possible Solution:
Please use „VNC“ for a connection over a NAT Router. Please have also a look at FAQ 04

Another cause / check the settings:

In the Windows® Event log is the following entry listed:

EventID: 10009
Source: DCOM
DCOM could not exchange any datas with the computer "XY" using any, configured protocolls.

Possible Solution:
MSKB: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q245197

Another cause:
The DCOM-interface was damaged by a virus (W32Blaster):

Check the settings:
Please check your system with a virus scan. An actual knowing worm is the w32.blaster worm..

Possible Solution:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826955

General Tipp:
Windows® event log: Check the Windows® event log on the server and the Clients for any references. As special have a look on entries with the source "DCOM”.

Containment of the error:
Is a local connection on the server successfull??

- Install for this first the Public ShareFolder Client also on the server.
- create an additional Outlook® profile also on the server
- connect the client to the server on the same machine with the name of the server „local host“

If no connection is possible, the reason is on the server. If the connection is possible, the reasonis on the Client and/or in the network connection between server and client.

Are on the computer several network card configures?

Deactivate for a test the not used network cards, in order to be able to limit the error. For this also virtual network maps cards (e.g. ISDN adapters) must be deactivated.

Test the DCOM connection with the Microsoft® demo program:

Download: http://download.microsoft.com/download/Winntsrv40/Utility/1.0/WIN98/EN-US/DCOMTest.exe

For Windows® XP, you can do this check also with the Network testtool in the Network connection settings.
